In relation to violent TV programs and movies,the cathartic effect refers to the process by which people relieve their stress and aggressive impulses from watching violence.

The cathartic effect hypothesis suggests that by watching violent media, individuals can release their aggression and therefore become less violent. However, several studies have refuted this hypothesis and found that exposure to violent media could lead to an increase in aggression and desensitization to violence.
