There are many ways to define abnormality based on the background of a psychologist. Most mental health professionals describe abnormality by looking for maladaptive personality traits, psychological discomfort regarding a particular behavior, and evidence that the behavior is preventing the person from functioning well in life. They also recognize that abnormality and abnormal behavior is identified in a matter of degrees.
