Why do so few black women get cosmetic procedures?

There is little research on ethnic differences in cosmetic procedures, but examinations of body image suggest that at all ages black women are more satisfied with their bodies than white women. As young adults, African American women report feeling less pressure to conform to Western beauty ideas as portrayed by the media and are less likely to internalize thin ideals for body shape. African American women may hold definition of attractiveness that is multifaceted and extends beyond a small body size to include factors such as dress attire and race. Likewise research with adolescent girls has suggested that they identify beauty as defined through attitude, style, personality, and presence. Cultural depictions of beauty may protect African American women from negative depictions of aging in mainstream culture.
