Concepts to Consider: Skin receptors are sensitive to body temperature changes; they send information to the hypothalamus, which is the temperature control center. Nerves send a signal to the muscles to shiver, increasing the body temperature. When the body temperature is increased, sweat glands transfer heat to the environment by the evaporation of sweat. In addition, blood vessels dilate in the skin to release heat to the surface. When the body is cold, vessels in the skin constrict to reduce heat loss.
