The route of visual information from the visual receptors (rods and cones) to the brain goes from receptors to the bipolar cells to the ganglion cells through the optic nerve and finally to the brain. Describe in greater detail the route from the bipolar cells to the brain, specifically defining the ganglion cells and optic nerve.

On Jun 23, 2024

The bipolar cells make contact with the ganglion cellswhich are neurons that receive their input from the bipolar cells. The axons from the ganglion cells join to form the optic nerve, which turns around and exits the eye. Half of each optic nerve crosses to the opposite side of the brain at the optic chiasm. Axons from the optic nerve then separate and go to several locations in the brain. In humans, most go to the thalamus, which then sends information to the primary visual cortex in the occipital lobe.

List three types of physical illnesses that can be exacerbated by the presence of chronically elevated stress.

On May 25, 2024

Chronic stress can have a significant impact on physical health, exacerbating a variety of illnesses. Three types of physical illnesses that can be worsened by chronically elevated stress levels include:

1. Cardiovascular Diseases: Chronic stress can lead to an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, which over time can strain the cardiovascular system. This can exacerbate conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), coronary artery disease, heart attacks, and strokes. Stress can also contribute to unhealthy behaviors like poor diet and lack of exercise, which are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.

2. Gastrointestinal Disorders: Stress can affect the gastrointestinal system and exacerbate conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and peptic ulcers. It can influence the motility and function of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to symptoms like stomachaches, diarrhea, and constipation.

3. Immune System Disorders: Chronic stress can weaken the immune system, making the body more susceptible to infections and slowing down the healing process. It can also worsen autoimmune diseases, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and psoriasis. Stress can trigger flare-ups and increase the severity of symptoms in these conditions.

Managing stress through relaxation techniques, exercise, proper nutrition, and seeking professional help when necessary can be crucial in mitigating its negative effects on these and other health conditions.
