Individuals who are otherwise healthy typically continue to maintain a high level of mental functioning into old age. Choosing to pursue new interests, expand skills, and learn has a beneficial effect on memory. Although the mind works a bit slower, continuing cognitive tasks serves to protect function as we age. Alzheimer's is a neurological disorder in which progressive memory loss is initiated by brain deterioration. Starting with minor issues in memory loss, the disease progresses, taking anywhere from 2-20 years. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer's, but there are drugs being developed that will slow down deterioration. Additionally, there appears to be evidence that lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, stress reduction and sleep improvement can also have significant effects on individuals who are suffering from the disease.
