How do functionalists and conflict theorists differ in how they approach and understand gender inequality?

On Sep 23, 2024

The functionalist perspective sees some merit in a patriarchal division of labor within a family, in which the man is the "breadwinner" and the woman is the "caretaker." Good answers will mention Talcott Parsons's conception of the complementary nature of the man's instrumental role and the woman's expressive role. However, functionalist theory does little to explain the persistence of gender inequality. On the other hand, conflict theorists like Friedrich Engels believe that patriarchal gender segregation exploits women and that gender inequality persists because keeping women in uncompensated support roles bolsters the capitalist system.
