Compare the mechanism of action of a steroid and a protein-type hormone at the cellular level.

Steroid hormones are lipid soluble and, therefore, pass through the plasma and nuclear membranes to combine with nuclear receptors. This interaction results in the synthesis of new proteins. Protein hormones combine with plasma membrane cell receptors and initiate a signaling cascade involving protein activation that will produce an alteration of cell activity.
