Define environmental racism and provide one example.

On May 26, 2024

Environmental racism is a form of discrimination against minority groups and people from poor countries who are subjected to a disproportionate share of environmental hazards and polluting industries.
Examples will vary but may include toxic waste facilities that are more likely to be located in areas with large black and Hispanic populations, landfill sites being often located near Aboriginal communities;logging carried out in Aboriginal peoples' traditional-use areas;hydroelectric projects flooding vast areas of land used by Aboriginal peoples (e.g. ,the James Bay Cree in Quebec);and 62 industrial facilities being located in "Chemical Valley" just outside the Aamjiwnaang First Nation near Sarnia,Ontario. The fact that few Aboriginal communities have safe drinking water is further evidence of environmental racism.
