What is a functional conflict?

A functional conflict is constructive in nature. For example, when a group of employees meets to make a decision that affects all of them, some conflict can be good because too much harmony and agreement can result in a poor decision. When people focus more on getting along well than on coming up with creative solutions in decision making, they may not generate as many ideas as they would have otherwise.
