Exercise myths include (1) exercise causes arthritis, (2) working out with weights is only for men, and (3) it is dangerous for older people to start exercising. Moderate physical activity is recommended for individuals with arthritis during non-acute phases and not associated with joint damage. Strength training is beneficial for both men and women and results in greater bone density, muscle strength, and balance. Finally, all people can benefit from regular physical activity including older adults.
