Need theories are motivation theories that specify the kinds of needs people have and the conditions under which they will be motivated to satisfy these needs in a way that contributes to performance.Examples of need theories are Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, Alderfer's ERG Theory, and McClelland's Theory of Needs.Self-determination is also a theory that involves need satisfaction although the focus is on whether motivation is controlled or autonomous. The managerial implications of need theories for motivating employees are to appreciate diversity and to appreciate intrinsic motivation. For self-determination theory, managerial implications involve the satisfaction of the three basic psychological needs.
