Benjamin Barber uses the term "jihad" to refer to the forces of tribalism and traditionalism that resist globalization and seek to maintain their cultural and religious identities. An example of this would be the rise of fundamentalist religious movements in the Middle East that reject Western influence and seek to establish Islamic states.
On the other hand, Barber uses the term "McWorld" to describe the homogenizing and standardizing forces of globalization, particularly as represented by American consumer culture. An example of this would be the spread of fast food chains and multinational corporations around the world, leading to a loss of local cultural diversity.
